A Picture A Day

Homeworld Remastered.
In 1999, Vancouver-based developer Relic Entertainment released their first game. The game was Homeworld, a real time strategy game set in space. For its time, Homeworld was a visual feast. Beautiful, 3D modeled space ships in combat against glorious backdrops of star fields and nebulas. In 2015, 16 years after the release of the original game, Gearbox Software released Homeworld Remastered, with both upgrades visuals and a refined user interface. But does Homeworld stand the test of time?
Both critics and players rejoiced when the original Homeworld was released. Even I wrote a preview of sorts. But the visuals wasn #8217;t the only aspect that made the game stand out. Homeworld came with an intricate, original backstory, a feature that wasn #8217;t exactly in abundance among the strategy games released at the time.
An ancient space ship is discovered buried in the sand at the dessert planet Kharak. It contains a stone map showing Kharak and another planet across the galaxy labelled #8220;Higara #8221; #8211; home. The clans of Kharak unite to build a giant mothership that will carry 600,000 people on the long journey to Higara to reclaim their home planet. But during a final calibration test of the mothership #8217;s hyperdrive things go bad. It turns out that strong forces in the universe are prepared to do whatever it takes to keep the Higarans from leaving Kharak, and start the journey back home.
Homeworld Remastered and its beautiful space combat.

AI War 2 Kickstarter Campaign, Take Two.
You might remember Arcen Games #8216; first AI War 2 Kickstarter campaign. I wrote about it when the campaign launched, and while I threw quite a lot of money Arcen #8217;s way, I didn #8217;t really think they would reach their very ambitious $299,400 funding goal in time.
When people say #8220;I hate to say I told you so #8221;, they rarely really do. But when Arcen Games founder Chris Park cancelled the campaign on November 10, I felt really bad for him. I don #8217;t know Chris personally, and I #8217;ve never talked to the guy. Still, by following what he #8217;s been doing to promote both his company and the AI War 2 Kickstarter campaign, it #8217;s obvious that this is a man who lives and breathes for making games he really believes in. Park is not a guy who gives up, and lays down in the fetal position under a desk when the world kicks him in the nuts.
Instead, he goes back to the drawing board, takes good advice from the people around him, and returns with a new, better, and refined AI War 2 Kickstarter campaign.

PoisonTap #8211; The $5 Tool That Steals All Your Stuff.
A while back I wrote about the WiFi Pineapple, a wonderful little device that can be used to #8220;audit #8221;1 wireless networks. The device makes it surprisingly easy to act as Man in the Middle (MitM), a technique used by hackers to effectively steal all your passwords and credit card numbers. The cheapest version of the WiFi Pineapple, the Nano, costs just shy of $100. Not a lot of money, but it #8217;s a bit too much for me to spend on a device that can #8217;t be used for anything cool without breaking more laws than I can count. But now there #8217;s a new toy available that does many of the same things as the WiFi Pineapple: PoisonTap.
Price tag? Around $5.
PoisonTap also plays the role as the MitM, but there #8217;s a big difference. While the WiFi Pineapple hijacks wireless networks, PoisonTap needs physical access to the computer you wish to audit. Because of that, it #8217;s easy to dismiss PoisonTap as pretty useless. It #8217;s hard to get physical access to an unattended computer, isn #8217;t it? No, it #8217;s not. If you #8217;re working in an office environment, simply take a look around you at lunch time. And if you have access to a conference center or a hotel, take a look inside. I bet you can find an unattended computer within minutes.
Another reason you might dismiss PoisonTap as worthless, is the size of the delivery vehicle. The version of PoisonTap demoed by its creator, Samy Kamkar, runs on a Raspberry Pi Zero. While the Zero is small, it #8217;s not exactly invisible, and not hard to spot. But the PosionTap software doesn #8217;t have to run on a Raspberry Pi, it #8217;s possible to install it on even smaller computers. Both LANTurtle or USB Armory are viable options. Not too easy to spot one of those connected to the back of the workstation tucked under your desk, is it?
On top of that, the PosionTap doesn #8217;t have to be connected for long. Just leave it plugged in for a minute or two, then pull it out, and walk away. The target computer is now infected, and a persistent backdoor has been installed.

November One-liners.
Here are a few new one-liners I #8217;ve added to the collection:
I can scramble Rubik #8217;s Cube in under 5 seconds.
I just asked my husband if he remembers what today is. Scaring men is easy.
#8220;Every time I think I #8217;m weird I ride the NYC subway. #8221; #8212; Harry Enten
My email password has been hacked. That #8217;s the third time I #8217;ve had to rename the cat.
My only goal when getting ready to go out in public is to make sure a teenager doesn #8217;t take a discreet picture of my outfit and meme me.
I like older men because they #8217;ve gotten used to life #8217;s disappointments.
The worst part about getting kidnapped would be when the news told everyone your real height and weight.
Why is it so hard to find someone who loves me for the person I carefully crafted online, that doesn鈥檛 represent me at all?
I #8217;m currently boycotting any company that sells items I can #8217;t afford.
I always feel better when my doctor says something is normal for my age, but then again dying will also be normal for my age at some point.
There #8217;s nothing I #8217;ve learned from being a father that I couldn #8217;t just as easily have figured out from setting all my money on fire.
#8220;I have a lightsaber next to my bed just in case someone ever breaks in, I can make them feel sorry for me. #8221; #8212; Nick Ross
I want to be something really scary for Halloween this year so I #8217;m dressing up as a phone battery at 2%.
The hotel has a live band and my favorite song is #8220;We #8217;re going for a break now, we #8217;ll be back later #8221;.
I just want to be rich enough to be referred to as eccentric instead of just nuts.
#8220;I鈥檝e agreed so much with my wife that my head just starts nodding at the sound of her voice. #8221; #8212; Kent Graham
If you love someone, never talk about politics.
Got a solid 8 hours of worrying last night.
#8220;I #8217;m watching my neighbor through the blinds, he #8217;s so creepy. #8221; #8212; Jacob Swift

Whisky Drinks.
This weekend the annual Oslo Whisky Festival came and went. The bulk of Oslo #8217;s male, red-nosed, middle-aged, and slightly overweight population gathered, and used words like #8220;single malt #8221;, #8220;blended #8221;, #8220;nosing #8221;, and #8220;refill #8221;. But if attended the show, you didn #8217;t hear much talk about whisky drinks.
For many hard core whisky drinkers, mixing the precious liquid with anything except for a drop of water, is borderline sacrilegious. You can #8217;t have something stored and pampered with for 25 years just to pour it into a glass of Soda. What an awful thought! Or is it really that bad?
A few years ago the festival silently introduced a whisky bar to the show floor. It was crammed into a dark corner without much fanfare, but soon became the prime location for the festival #8217;s very, very limited female visitors #8211; and people like me and my friends, who really don #8217;t know much about whisky, except that we enjoy a sip every now and then. You #8217;ll also see some of the old timers start queuing up at the bar towards the end of the evening, but of course they #8217;ll deny everything and fake amnesia the next morning.
If you have a bottle of whisky gathering dust somewhere (and a lot of people do), here are three rather simple drinks you can make right now1. A glass of whisky is also a great way to wash away the bitter taste of yesterday #8217;s election.
